Social Action has expressed sadness over the death of Miss Joy Amos, a young woman who sustained severe burns following the gas-related explosion that occurred in Bille Kingdom on September 3, 2026.
Miss Amos died in the early hours of Tuesday, September 22, at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH), Port Harcourt, where she had been receiving treatment after being evacuated from Bille.
Social Action, in a release signed by Senior Programs Officer, Mr Prince Ekpere, said, “Her death is devastating and raises serious questions that must not be left unanswered.”
The release said, “Joy’s ordeal began on 3 September when an explosion occurred inside the room where she was resting in Bille. The explosion shattered the windows and engulfed the room in flames, leaving her with extensive burns.”
The incident occurred amid months of reports of gas bubbling and suspected methane emissions in Bille, including reports of gas emerging around homes, wells, cracks in the ground and surrounding water bodies.
Ekpere said, “Social Action documented Joy’s condition and testimony and brought her situation to public attention. Following the growing public concern, the Rivers State Government intervened, evacuated her to RSUTH and committed to covering the cost of her treatment.
“The State Deputy Governor, Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu, visited Joy at the hospital on 14 September and assured her of the government’s support. At the time, the hospital reported that she was receiving specialised care and responding positively to treatment.
“The news of her death is shocking and should not be treated as just another incident. Social Action therefore calls for an immediate and independent autopsy to establish the medical cause of her death.
“We further demand a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death, including her treatment and medical records from the time she was evacuated from Bille until her death,” he said.
Ekpere further said, “Social Action will seek to be fully involved in the process of establishing the circumstances of Joy’s death. Her family and the public deserve clear answers. Her death must not simply be recorded and forgotten.
“We are particularly concerned because Joy’s death comes against the backdrop of an unresolved environmental emergency in Bille. Months of warnings about gas bubbling and seepage preceded the explosion that severely injured her.
“Civil society organisations and other stakeholders had already raised concerns about the possibility of a wider disaster. Joy’s death makes those warnings even more urgent,” he said.
Ekpere added that, “As the rainy season gives way to the dry and harmattan period, the risks associated with gas accumulation and fire require urgent attention. Bille residents cannot continue to live with the fear that another explosion could occur in their homes or communities.”
Social Action therefore demanded:
An immediate autopsy to establish the cause of Joy Amos’s death;
- A full investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death and treatment, with relevant medical records made available to the appropriate investigating authorities;
- An urgent investigation into the source and cause of the gas emissions in Bille;
- Comprehensive environmental and public-health assessments of affected areas;
- Immediate measures to protect residents from further exposure and prevent another explosion;
- Clear emergency and evacuation protocols for Bille;
- Transparent communication with residents about the risks they face; and,
- Identification and accountability of any company, institution or other actor found to have contributed to the environmental conditions responsible for the crisis.
Ekpere said the state government’s intervention “to secure medical treatment for Joy was important and demonstrated that government action can save lives. But Joy’s death must now trigger a deeper investigation into both her death and the unresolved conditions in Bille that placed her and other residents in danger.
“Joy Amos went through an unimaginable ordeal. She survived the explosion, suffered devastating burns and fought for her life in hospital. Her life cannot end as an unexplained statistic.
“Social Action calls on the Rivers State Government, relevant federal agencies, medical authorities and other stakeholders to ensure that Joy’s death is thoroughly investigated, the truth is established, and those responsible for any wrongdoing or negligence are held accountable. Joy’s life mattered. Her death demands answers,” he said.
