Over Seventy pregnant women in Okuru Ama Community and its environs in Port Harcourt Local Government Area on Thursday August 28, 2025 graciously benefitted from free antenatal medical checkup programme tagged “Safe Motherhood and Child Survival” organized by Rotary Club of Trans Amadi District 9141 Nigeria.

    ‎

‎The free medical health care program was held at Okuru Ama model primary Health Centre and covered giving birthing kids to expectant mothers, register some indigent mothers, free blood pressure checks, testing for malaria and dispensing of medications for expectant mothers and children under the age of five years.

    ‎

‎ The program started with a health talk by the Matron in charge of the clinic, Mrs. Florence Abbey, who emphasized to the women the importance of regular antenatal checkups and taking of their drugs.

    ‎

‎Fielding questions from newsmen at the side line of the event, the President of Rotary Club of Trans Amadi District 9141 Nigeria, Rtn. Benjamin Orabueze disclosed that the essence of the project which is in line with one of the seven areas of focus of Rotary International, was basically to re-emphasize to the pregnant women the need to ensure that they take the issue of going for antenatal very seriously which according to him, will help ensure they have successful delivery.

    ‎

    ‎

‎“Though, most pregnant women do not take the issue of going to clinic for antenatal seriously, following their inability to pay for the registration and this informed the decision of the members of Rotary Club of Trans  Amadi who are known for rendering humanitarian serve to come out to do the registration with the clinic so that none of the pregnant women within the vicinity will have a cause to complain not to go for antenatal checkup for proper checkup before delivery”.

    ‎

‎“Indeed, I’m impressed with the massive turn out of the pregnant women for the antenatal, believing that they will sustain the tempo, to enable them deliver safely by the grace of God”, he remarked.

    ‎

‎He, further, reminded all the pregnant women to do well to embrace such a good opportunity whenever it comes their way since it does not come up every year or time. The Rotarian Boss maintained that the choice of Okuru-Ama Community for the project was based on needs assessment amongst many other Communities, before embarking on the project.

    ‎

‎”Our club found out that there were more people in the Okuru – Ama Community who actually need help to register for antenatal, and hence decided to take the project to the Community where the impact will be highly felt and appreciated.

    ‎

‎“I think this good idea of Rotary Club of Trans Amadi District 9141 in touching lives positively through antenatal registration will go a long way in helping some pregnant women in saving some money that would be used to buy other things like clothes for their unborn babies at the end of the day”,  he said.

    ‎

‎In a separate interview, the Service Project Chair of the club for the year 2025/2026, Rtn. Daniel Rich Edet was full of praises for his fellow members towards investing in the life touching project which was aimed at ensuring that pregnant women particularly the indigent ones who could not afford the money to pay for the antenatal registration are enrolled freely to enable them deliver in safely.

    ‎

    ‎

‎He however described the project as a huge success, given the great number or pregnant women that actually turned out and were given both drugs, checkup for malaria as well as birthing kits in readiness for safe delivery.

    ‎

‎Also adding his voice was the community Development committee (CDC) chairman of Okuru Ama community, Roland Ibiewari who could not hold back his joy in commending members of Rotary club of Trans Amadi, District 9141 Nigeria for their wonderful humanitarian service extended to about one hundred pregnant women in his community.

    ‎

‎The visibly elated C.D.C Boss, however, charged all the pregnant women to do well to embrace an opportunity like this by ensuring that they attend routine antenatal check-ups which had been graciously bankrolled by members of Rotary club of Trans Amadi.

    ‎

‎“For me this kind of gesture from the Rotarians is worthy of emulation and therefore, will urge the politicians to cue into the good work  Rotary club members are doing in touching lives of the down trodden all over the nation rather than coming out only during political campaign to make flamboyant promises with a view to attract peoples votes in mass”, he frankly stated.

    ‎

‎Some of the pregnant women who spoke to news men after the programme expressed happiness and gratitude to members of Rotary club of Trans Amadi District 9141, for their kind gesture especially at this turbulent time in the country while praying God to guide and replenish their purse bountifully in all their good endeavors in life.
