The governor of Bayelsa State, Sen. Douye Diri, has described the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme as a transformative experience for future leaders of the nation.

Gov. Diri, who made this known during the 2024 Batch A, Stream II closing ceremony held at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Boro Town, Bayelsa State, said as a transformative experience, the NYSC will shape future leaders of the nation, adding that Corps members should use the orientation camp lessons to hone their skills and knowledge as well as forge bonds of friendship that will undoubtedly serve them in future.

Diri, who was represented by the secretary to the State Government/ Chairman, NYSC State Governing Board, Prof. Nimibofa Ayawei, stressed that the NYSC programme is more than just a requirement, adding that “The challenges you have overcome, and the spirit of unity and service you have cultivated will be the foundation upon which you will build your lives and contribute to the development of our great state, Bayelsa, and our nation, Nigeria.”

He reminded them that service year in Bayelsa will not merely be to fulfil a requirement, but to make a lasting impact. He urged them to embrace the diversity of the state and immerse in the rich cultural heritage and strive to be agents of progress and transformation as the boundless potential of the youths can be harnessed to build a brighter future for all.

“During your stay in camp, there have been challenges and obstacles along the way. However, you have all demonstrated remarkable tenacity and perseverance. You have held on and seen this journey through to a happy conclusion.

“This same unwavering spirit and determination will serve you well as you continue in life. The lessons you have learned and the experiences you have gained during your time in the National Youth Service Corps will be invaluable assets as you embark on the next chapter of your life.

“You have shown that with dedication, resilience and a positive mindset, you can overcome any huddle that may stand in your way. This tenacity of spirit is a testament to your strength of character and will undoubtedly be key factor in your future success”, he emphasized.

Earlier, the state coordinator, Mrs Obiageli Charity Okpalifo urged the corps members to be good citizens and leaders, as well as promote national unity, cultural integration and religious tolerance as they proceed to their various places of primary assignments.

She highlighted the four cardinal programmes of the scheme which include orientation, primary assignment, secondary assignment and winding up/passing out parade.

Mrs Okpalifo emphasized that the orientation programmes remains the foundation of a successful service year, “I also want to remind all of you that your primary assignment runs simultaneously with Community Development Service.

“Therefore, while at your places of primary assignments, I urge you to identify the felt needs of your host community and then, initiate and execute viable CDS projects that will address such needs.

“By so doing, you will leave lasting memories in the minds of members of your host communities for years after you must have left the community.”

Also, Mrs Okpalifo noted that the Bayelsa State Government, alongside the NYSC, had put together a reward system for Corps members who distinguished themselves during the service year. “I therefore urge you to take advantage of this opportunity as you serve your land,” she said.

She further advised them to build up on the foundations they had acquired during the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED), In-camp training, to improve on their chosen skill, adding that some of their predecessors who heeded the wise counsel by also participating in the SAED Post-camp training are today business owners, doing very well in their various business endeavors, contributing positively to the growth of Nigeria ‘s economy.

She enjoined them to put the nation first, be good ambassadors of the scheme and the nation at large and maintain a high level of discipline, diligence, humility, obedience, respect and commitment to assigned duties.

Mrs Okpalifo charged them to avoid all actions that will tarnish the reputation of the scheme and put their lives in danger. She expressed gratitude the Bayelsa State Government for its commitment to the welfare and security of the corps members.

She also appreciated collaborating partners and camp officials for their team spirit, commitment and dexterity throughout the period of the orientation programme.

She called on employers and traditional rulers in the state to assist corps members in settling down quickly by providing them with accommodation and other welfare packages.
