…As Police Kill notorious kingpin, Arrest 12 for various crimes

    By Emmanuel Ovundah, Port Harcourt

The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Nwonyi Emeka has received commendations from Governor Siminalayi Fubara for initiating the “Rivers Zero Crime” (ROC) Campaign to combat crime in the state.

CP Emeka, as part of efforts to fight crimes and make Rivers State safe for residents and investors to dwell, launched ‘Rivers Zero Crime (ROC) Initiative’ in the state.

Governor Fubara who spoke during a press conference organised by the police commissioner to mark the official Flag off of the Rivers Zero Crime Campaign declared the preparedness of his administration to synergize with the police to ensure that Rivers State is peaceful, loving and safe for residents and investors.

The governor, represented by his deputy, Prof. Mrs. Ngozi Odu also lauded CP Emeka for his numerous achievements in combating crime in the state since assumption of office as the 44th Commissioner of Police in the state three months ago, adding that his administration is passionate about crime fighting in the state.

He said the State Government has always partnered with the police and other security agencies to fight crime, adding that under the watch of the immediate past Governor Nyesom Wike, surveillance and tactical centres were set up where surveillance and tactical operations were carried out across the state.

“Congratulations to the CP. I listened to your address and it was wonderful because most of the things you rolled out were things we realized you actually did within a very short period that you have been in Rivers State, cracking the uncrackable and pulling down the walls that can’t be easily pulled down.

“We sincerely appreciate the synergy that is being expressed by stakeholders and would be put together by sponsors, because if Rivers State is not free of crime, development won’t come and our people cannot sleep.

“All of us must work in synergy. Like the CP said, no information is too small. We want to see a Rivers State where people can sleep with their two eyes closed, have their night lives, feel good. A state where we can have industries. If industries are here, more youths will be engaged and youth restiveness will slow down.

“I therefore urged that we must all join CP Emeka to ensure that this innovative intervention come up with sees the light of the day.”

Speaking earlier, the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Nwonyi Emeka disclosed that the Rivers Zero Crime Initiative is a one-week programme, he in support of his team initiated to ensure safe and crime free environment across the 23 local government areas of the state, build trust and promote a positive union between the police and the citizens.

He noted that the ROC campaign was being done in partnership with the Rivers State Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), other professional bodies like the NBA, PMAN and other corporate organisations in the state to ensure that the state is safe.

The CP said the one-week event will feature an amnesty programme that will provide opportunity for cultists and all those involved in crime to denounce and lay down their weapons and reintegrate back to the society, road walk, workshop, medical outreach by the command, essay competition, beauty pageant, football competition (CP Cup), etc.

He added that the police management team and officers will be embarking on stop and search, present gift items and visit major flashpoints to educate youths on why they should shun crime and live a responsible and crime free life.

CP Emeka who commended the governor for the support he has continued to give to the State Police Command in ensuring that the state remains crime free, also thanked the IGP, Kayode Egbetokun for his visionary leadership and assistance to the command to succeed.

He urged all residents, stakeholders and firms operating in the state to join hands with the Police to fight crime and reduce it to zero level in the state.

He used the medium to list some of his achievements since assumption of office three months ago to include; arrest of 66 suspects for different crimes in the state, rescue of 22 kidnap victims, neutralized 18 suspects, recovered 210 arms and ammunitions, 17 vehicles, 1 boat and 5 television sets in the state.

Similarly, CP Nwonyi Emeka, while briefing Journalists at the Command’s headquarters, Moscow Road earlier, said operatives of the command in the last one week killed a notorious kingpin and arrested 12 suspects for armed robbery, cultism, murder and kidnapping across the state and also recovered arms and ammunitions, a vehicle and charms from the suspects.
