Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, on Monday, inaugurated a constituency bridge project constructed by the member representing Yenagoa/Kolokuma/Opokuma federal constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Oforji Oboku, at Opolo community in Yenagoa local government area.

Governor Diri also approved the construction of a road linking the community to the Gloryland Drive also in Yenagoa.

He commended the federal lawmaker for embarking on the massive project, noting that It was very rare for a lawmaker to undertake such expensive project.

He said: “It would have taken your full tenure and even more to complete a project like this. So I appreciate Honourable Oboku for remembering his people, because they say charity begins at home.”

Responding to an appeal to the state government to intervene in a lingering dispute between the community and its neighbours, Okutukutu and Edepie, the governor urged communities to maintain their peace for the sake of development.

“It is good for communities to be at peace. It is also a function of the leadership of the community to keep the peace, and I believe that we have a good leadership in Opolo community. I implore you to maintain the peace.”

In his welcome address, the paramount ruler of Opolo, HRH Inia Nengibo, Ogbogbo XII, said the project aligned with the agenda of the governor’s Prosperity Administration, especially in the area of urban renewal.

He appealed for the construction of a 2.5km road to link the bridge to the new Yenagoa City for improved socio-economic activities in the community and environs.

“The road will improve commerce, improve security and generally create easier movement of people. We are grateful for your magnanimity in recognising our community,” the paramount ruler said.

Also, the initiator, Hon. Oboku, said the landmark project was designed to connect the island communities, improve accessibility, enhance security and promote the socio-economic development of the people of Opolo.

“It is a project that will positively impact lives and stimulate economic activities within our community. My primary responsibility is to make laws and policies for the benefit of the people of Nigeria, especially my constituents.

“As a young boy, I remember that my people were praying for government to build a bridge across this creek. Now that I have the privilege, I took the decision to construct this bridge. I am excited today and I am grateful to the governor for his support so far.”

In a goodwill message, the Senator representing Bayelsa Central in the Senate, Dr. Konbowei Benson, said the project complements the governor’s infrastructure development and urban renewal efforts.

He urged the people of Opolo to continue to partner with the state government in order to enjoy the dividends of democracy in their community.
