    THE COST OF POLITICAL LOYALTY

    By: Emmanuel Kanayo

‎Loyalty is the anthem of politics. Praised on podiums, sung in campaigns, demanded in whispers.

‎For many, it has become a life sentence served in silence.

‎This is the untold political economy of sacrifice — the story of men and women who paid not with slogans, but with scars.

    ‎

‎To be loyal is to walk into fire for another man’s dream.

‎You quarrel with family over a banner. You lose contracts for your affiliation.

‎You are cursed online, side-eyed in the market, marked in your community.

‎You spend your last kobo, your sleep, your peace — all on the altar of belief.

‎This is _affective loyalty_: devotion rooted in conviction, not transaction.

‎But the sharpest pain comes after victory.

‎When the dust settles, the leader you defended begins to dine with those who threw stones at you.

‎The voices that mocked you now whisper in his ear. The hands that fought you now sign contracts in his name.

‎And you — who stood in the rain, who skipped meals — are left at the gate with an empty cup.

‎“It’s politics,” they say. As if politics must bury conscience. As if sacrifice expires on election day.

‎That is the deepest wound: not that you suffered, but that your suffering was bartered for convenience.

‎See the wreckage. Businesses bleed. Relationships break. Names are tagged.

‎Your old camp says, “We’ve moved on.” The new camp says, “We don’t know you.”

‎You become politically homeless — too loyal to be trusted elsewhere, too used to be celebrated here.

‎Bitterness grows. Good men exit. The field is left to opportunists.

‎This is how democracies decay: when institutions give way to personalities, and _transactional politics_ replaces covenant.

‎Why does this happen? Because leaders prize convenience over character.

‎Because there are no records of tears, only records of usefulness.

‎Because in the marketplace of power, yesterday’s enemy with money is preferred to yesterday’s friend with faith.

    ‎This cycle must be broken.

‎To the loyalist: Love your cause, but don’t crucify yourself. Serve with fire, but keep a roof over your head. Virtue without prudence is vulnerability.

‎To the leader: Power is borrowed. Character endures. Those who stood with you in the wilderness are your institutional memory. Don’t trade gold for glitter. A tree that cuts its roots will fall.

‎To the people: Stop celebrating political nomads. Start honoring faithful stewards. Ask every aspirant: “What happened to those who bled for you last time?”

‎To every soul who made enemies and lost peace for a belief: Heaven is watching.

‎May God mend what politics has broken. May He raise leaders who know you cannot build a palace on the backs of broken people.

‎Let this be the end of an era where loyalty equals suffering and abandonment.

‎We can be committed and still be covered. We can be faithful and still be valued.

‎A house that despises its foundation will not stand.

‎Let us build a culture where sacrifice is crowned and loyalty is not punished.

‎May God bless every sincere hand that has toiled.
